Wisco Women's
Fundamental Regatta
10/18-10/19
We sent five sailors to Wisconsin with weekend to take on Wisco Women’s. With shifty winds on day one and a steady cranking 18 knots on day two, the sailors completed a full round robin, and Northwestern sat in the middle of the fleet, finishing fifth of nine, though Margy Eno and Jordan Raizer (wearing pinnies) placed second twice. “It was a chance to compete amongst other MCSA women in a large variety of wind conditions which really let us grow and develop as a team and as individuals!” said senior Samantha Forgosh, left. Thanks to Wisconsin for hosting.
Stoney Burke Co-Ed Varsity
Regional Regatta
10/18-10/19
NUST sent 5 sailors out to sunny California this weekend to compete in Berkeley’s Stoney Burke regatta. Saturday was hot with low winds, and despite sitting in postponement for some time, several races were sailed in the beautiful California Bay (even spotted some seals!) Sunday brought stronger winds and more races. Afterwards, the team explored Berkeley and San Fransisco. “It was a really fun experience to sail in my home state, and I also loved getting to explore with my friends,” said Grace Gormley, right. “It was also fun to be at the biggest regatta I’ve ever been to, and we got to meet so many sailors from all over California and the west.” Thank you to Berkeley for hosting!
MCSA Match Race Championship
Conference Championship Regatta
10/4-10/5
Just south of Northwestern in Chicago, four NUST sailors competed in the MCSA Match Race Championship regatta, including two new freshman on the team. The sailors enjoyed a warm 80 degree weekend with lighter winds on Saturday and gusts up to 20kts on Sunday. They raced a sonar keelboats, and NUST took third place overall against eight other schools. “We put forward a great performance on day 1 in the lighter breeze but struggled as a light boat in heavy air the next day,” said freshman Elliott Yoder. “I got a lot of new experience match racing and trimming main for the first time, so a podium finish was an awesome way to end the weekend!” Thanks to the Chicago Yacht Club for hosting. (Photos coming soon!)
MCSA Singlehanded Championship
Conference Championship Regatta
9/20-9/21
NUST hosted the MCSA Singlehand Championships, both open and women’s, this weekend, and four NUST sailors competed to earn a spot at nationals. There were challenging conditions on Lake Michigan with some chop and shifty winds, but the 20 competitors sailed a full 12 races. “We had a great turnout from all the teams in the MCSA and got in some high quality races across various conditions,” said senior captain George Warfel, right. “Always great to be racing with a view of downtown Chicago!” Thanks to all the competitors across the MCSA for coming and competing!
Cary Price
Regional Regatta
9/20-9/21
NUST sent five sailors over to beautiful Michigan to sail in Cary Price. The conditions were strong for Baseline Lake, with an eastern wind of a strong 10 to 14 knots. In this wind, we sailed a full round robin, eight races per division. On the second day, amidst some rain, the wind died and the regatta was called early. Skipper Charlie Crowell earned two bullets, and Northwestern finished in fourth overall. “It was a really great regatta,” said sophomore Grace Gormley, right. “The conditions on the first day were great for warming back up after a summer off the water. Baseline Lake is really beautiful and it was wonderful to be out with friends.” Thanks to Michigan for hosting!
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (GLIOR)
Keelboat Regatta
8/5-8/7
We sent six NUST sailors down to Chicago at the Columbia Yacht Club to sail in our own Lake Michigan for the 2025 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (GLIOR). NUST took 3rd in the T10 division. “This year at GLIOR we had a blast sailing in some pretty heavy conditions on the first day and some lighter wind on the second day,” said sophomore Luke Sadalla, top middle. “As beginner to intermediate keelboat sailors, we had the opportunity to vastly improve our skills over the course of the weekend and ended up with a place on the podium in the T10 fleet. We'd like to give a huge thanks to Ron Kallen for letting us use his boat and Ian Kallen for coaching us. We are super excited to come back next year and compete again!”
Oberg Trophy
Cross Regional Regatta
10/18-10/19
Northwestern traveled to Boston to compete in the Oberg Trophy this weekend. I’ll turn it over to Nick Chesemore with the details. “After a windless Saturday spent in postponement and 1 called off start, we were able to complete 5 races in each division (3) on Sunday. Conditions were quite variable, with classic Charles River 60 degree oscillations. A division got lots of starts practice in doing ~10 starts for those 5 races due to the variable breeze. Our team gained valuable experience sailing against the competitive east coast fleet, including several top 10 finishes and lots of lessons to take into our Midwest Fall championship next week!” Thanks to Northeastern for hosting!
Rebecca Blank Memorial Regatta
Fundamental Regatta
10/11-10/12
This weekend Northwestern hosted our home regatta! Ten schools raced this weekend, and Northwestern’s three berths took first, fourth and sixth. With strong winds and some rolling waves on both days, the sailors faced fun and challenging conditions. “We were so happy to have so many schools at our sailing center,” said regatta chair Charlie Crowell, center in blue. “Supporting so many sailors was great. We saw amazing performances from our northwestern sailors. Transitioning them out every so often, we had upwards of ten different sailors on the water this weekend, and everyone did a fantastic job. There was huge improvement among our newer sailors, and our veterans continued to do what they do best.” Thanks to all the schools for coming!
Bouldeman Cup
Fundamental Regatta
9/27-9/28
We sent five NUST sailors to Western Michigan to race a J-22 keelboat in the Bouldeman Cup competition. With light winds on day one, the sailors completed three races, but with low wind on day two, no races were completed. NUST took fourth place overall. One of the sailors was NUST’s Keelboat Coordinator, sophomore Roma Chiliarchopoulos (left). “I really enjoyed this regatta,” he said. “We were very competitive and had great communication on the boat.” Thanks to NUST’s new Keelboat Coordinator position, the team will be able to compete in more keelboat regattas in the coming year. Thanks to Western Michigan for hosting Bouldeman!
Boiler Cup
Fundamental Regatta
9/20-9/21
Six NUST sailors joined Purdue, Marquette, Saginaw Valley State and of course, four-legged friend Boatie at Boiler Cup at Purdue University this weekend. Wind was light both days, around four to five knots, and we sailed 16 races in total. Northwestern finished fifth overall. “I joined the team with no sailing experience and was so happy I was able to go to Boiler Cup as my first regatta,” said sophomore Elisa Trevino, second from right. “It was wonderful learning experience and I loved being able to get to know my teammates a little better.” Thanks to Purdue and the volunteers at Eagle Creek for hosting and making such a great regatta!
Fall Fury
Regional Regatta
9/13-9/14
Right before classes started up, we sent five NUST sailors up to Wisconsin to compete in Fall Fury. A whopping 15 teams competed — some coming from as far as Arizona — in mild conditions on Lake Mendota, with wind around 7 knots. Northwestern had a strong and consistent showing, with 5 second place finishes in individual races. Northwestern won the regatta overall, with 22 points. “We had so much fun at Fall Fury!” said junior Maddie Fitzgerald, right. “The weather was gorgeous and the wind was nice and light. We all sailed smart and well and won the regatta!” Big thanks to Wisconsin for hosting!
